Polite, proud and sociable; good manners and a proper greeting are non-negotiable.
✓ Considered polite
- Say good morning or good afternoon before any request - Bajans hold courtesy dear
- Dress neatly away from the beach; beachwear is for the sand only
- Take an interest in cricket - it is the surest conversation starter on the island
- Ask permission before photographing people
✗ Better avoided
- Pack or wear camouflage clothing - it is reserved for the military by law
- Rush conversations - a little small talk comes before business
- Sunbathe topless or nude - it is not accepted on any beach
- Expect loud nightlife everywhere - much of the island winds down early outside St Lawrence Gap
Worth knowing
- The Barbadian dollar is pegged at 2 to 1 US; US dollars are widely taken with change in Bajan
- A 10% service charge often appears on bills; tip 10-15% where it does not
- Cars drive on the left, and buses and ZR vans charge a flat fare paid in cash
- Sunday is quiet - churches full, many shops shut, buses sparse
