Consett Bay

Consett Bay sits at the bottom of a steep road on Barbados's east coast, a small fishing bay where a breakwater gives just enough shelter for boats to be kept and hauled up on the ramp. It is a working place rather than a beach: nets, ice, engines and the catch coming in. Cliffs rise on both sides and the Atlantic runs in past the wall. Barbados has a network of small fishing bays like this around the coast, and each has its own boat owners and landing rights.

What to look for

• The fishing boats - the working craft hauled up on the ramp.
• The breakwater - the wall that makes the bay usable at all.
• The cliffs - the ground rising steeply on both sides.
• The working scene - nets, ice and the catch rather than sunbathing.

When to go

December to May is the dry season. Landings happen through the day, heaviest in the morning. The east coast is rough year round.

Things to know

It is a working fishing bay with no facilities for visitors. Swimming is not sensible here. The road down is very steep and narrow.
