Madhabkunda drops around sixty metres over a rock face into a pool in a wooded gorge in the hills of Moulvibazar district near the Indian border, and it is generally counted among the larger waterfalls in Bangladesh, which is a country without many. A short walk from the car park leads to the pool at the base, where people wade and stand under the edge of the fall. Flow depends on rain: it is substantial through and after the monsoon and much reduced in the dry season. The area around it is tea garden and forest with Khasi and Manipuri villages, and an eco-park with paths has been laid out around the site. It is a standard destination for Bangladeshi visitors and is busy at weekends.

What you actually see

  • A sixty-metre drop - one of the larger falls in the country.
  • The pool at the base - where visitors wade and stand.
  • A wooded gorge - the rock and forest enclosing the fall.
  • Tea gardens and villages around - the country the site sits in.

When to go

July to October for the strongest flow, which is the monsoon; the dry season reduces it considerably. Half a day. Weekends and holidays are very crowded. Mornings are quieter.

Honest expectations

The rocks around the pool are slippery and accidents happen. It is extremely crowded at weekends. Litter is a serious problem. The flow is poor in the dry season, which is the comfortable travel season.

Nearby

Barlekha is west; Hakaluki haor lies north.
