Kunst Haus Wien

The Kunst Haus Wien opened in 1991 in a nineteenth-century Thonet bentwood furniture factory that Friedensreich Hundertwasser converted himself, applying the same principles as at the Hundertwasserhaus two streets away: a chequerboard façade in mismatched colours, an undulating floor that rises and dips under you, trees growing out of the windows, and no straight lines where he could help it. The upper floors hold a permanent presentation of his own work - paintings, prints, architectural models, tapestries and the ecological manifestos he wrote - and the lower ones run temporary exhibitions, since 2017 concentrated on photography and on environmental themes, which follows from his own preoccupations. It is a museum designed by the artist it exhibits, which is unusual and makes the building part of the show.

Things to know

The uneven floor is genuinely disorienting for some visitors and awkward with a wheelchair or stick. The temporary shows are photography-led, which is not what everyone comes expecting.
