Getting thereDachstein glacier cable car from Ramsau am Dachstein
EntryCable car fare including the installations

The Dachstein south face rises as a wall above Ramsau, and the cable car from the Türlwandhütte lands at the Hunerkogel at about two thousand seven hundred metres directly on the top of it. What has been built there is a sequence of exposure: the Skywalk, a viewing platform cantilevered over the two-hundred-and-fifty-metre drop; the Treppe ins Nichts, the stairs into nothingness, a flight of fourteen steps ending in a glass floor over the void; and a suspension bridge of about a hundred metres crossing between rock outcrops, described as the highest in Austria. There is also an ice palace cut into the glacier. On a clear day the view runs to the Grossglockner and, it is claimed, into Slovenia and the Czech Republic.

What you actually see

  • A platform over a 250-metre drop - cantilevered off the top of the south face.
  • The stairs into nothingness - fourteen steps to a glass floor over the void.
  • A hundred-metre suspension bridge - the highest in Austria, between outcrops.
  • An ice palace - galleries cut into the glacier below the station.

When to go

All year; clear settled days. Half a day.

Honest expectations

Cloud closes the view often and wind closes the bridge. It is cold and the air is thin at 2,700 metres. Cable car queues in season are long. Not for anyone uneasy with heights.

Nearby

Ramsau and Schladming are below; the Riesachfall is in the next valley.
