Garni and Geghard

A short trip east of Yerevan lies a striking pairing of Armenia's ancient and Christian heritage. The Temple of Garni is the only Greco-Roman colonnaded temple in the region, an elegant first-century pagan structure of graceful columns perched dramatically on the edge of a deep gorge whose walls are lined with remarkable hexagonal basalt columns, the Symphony of Stones. Nearby, the UNESCO monastery of Geghard is partly hewn directly into the living rock of the cliffs, its dim, echoing chambers and khachkar cross-stones carved from the mountain itself.
